The South Carolina Legislature adjourned earlier this month for the year with the Sine Die resolution, allowing the legislature to continue work on items including the budget, vetoes and conference committee reports in June. All other bills must start over when the legislature returns in January 2023.

Signed into law by Governor McMaster on May 13, S. 11 provides paid family leave for state employees. For those who give birth, the bill provides six weeks of paid leave. For other state employees who did not give birth, they will receive two weeks of paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child or placement of a foster child. The bill will go into effect on October 1, 2022. The bill was introduced by Sens. Darrell Jackson (D-Richland) and Katrina Shealy (R-Lexington).

Other bills signed and passed into law include legislation on extended foster care, kinship care, Committee on Children reauthorization, child abuse response protocol and birth certificate requests. A recap of 2022 legislative accomplishments that will impact children and families is available.
