On Wednesday, January 25, Gov. Henry McMaster addressed South Carolinians in his annual State of the State Address. He opened his address by citing the economic successes of 2022 as evidenced by $3.5 billion in unexpected revenue, record-breaking capital investments, thousands of new jobs and business opportunities, one of the fastest-growing container ports in the nation and burgeoning tourism.

As his remarks turned to 2023 and his executive budget, he stated, “Today, we are presented with an opportunity to take bold, transformative actions that will build prosperity for generations to come. The foundations of our successes rest on three pillars: economic strength, education and our natural environment.”

Topics impacting children and families included investments in rural communities’ infrastructure, school safety and educational access, mental health services and preserving the state’s cultural heritage and environment.
