South Carolinians are doing amazing things every day that help children and their families. Some people do things that may seem grand and far-reaching while the actions of others may seem small and not that consequential. However, all of this adds up to make a tremendous difference for the children and families in our state. Elizabeth Gibbes, Children’s Trust social media coordinator, is launching a #Good4SCkids campaign on our Facebook and Instagram webpages to highlight those things – the big and the small, the everyday and the grand – because we know that it takes all of us working together to build stronger families and keep children safe. Follow along as she posts weekly.

What does Children’s Trust of South Carolina do?

We advocate for child well-being. We fund programs across the state. We are home to Safe Kids South Carolina, KIDS COUNT and Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina. We lead coalitions. We provide resources.

What does that all mean though? It means we do things that are good for the children of South Carolina.

One day, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across Humans of New York, a page that shares pictures and stories of people on the streets of New York City. I thought to myself how interesting it would be if we could share stories of our partners doing good work for children across South Carolina. A few conversations and meetings later, #Good4SCkids was born.

Through our work across the state, we have the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life. We want to share their stories and the work they are doing that is #Good4SCkids. We are highlighting national speakers, nonprofit leaders, social workers, child-serving professionals, parents, your neighbor and anybody else who wants to share their story.

You may be thinking that since you don’t work directly with children or aren’t actively advocating for children that you aren’t doing good things for kids. But you may have more of a connection than you realize.

I’m not a parent, but I have many children I love and care about in my life. One of my favorite activities after work is playing with the children next door. Some days I haven’t even put my car in park before the 8-year-old runs over and asks if I want to play water guns or time him as he runs up and down the driveway. While I’m watching the next Usain Bolt sprint, my fiancé can usually be found playing basketball with the older brother or learning how to use the RipStik, a combination of a skateboard, snowboard and surfboard that no adult is ever likely to successfully master.

I’m sure you’re wondering how this is #Good4SCkids. By spending time with the neighbor’s children, we are giving their parents a needed break as they transition from work to cooking dinner to helping with their children’s homework. They know the children are being watched and are safe so they can focus on another task. It might not seem like a lot, but we are giving two parents a timeout that they might need.

If you have a story you want to share, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your story and we will be in touch. Follow us on social media to see the stories of those in South Carolina who are doing #Good4SCkids.
