Last week, the Senate Family and Veterans Services Subcommittee favorably supported S. 380 to allow relatives or fictive kin to have increased legal backing and to receive financial support and other benefits which have long been available to other foster care parents.
Children’s Trust CEO Sue Williams spoke during the meeting explaining that children in foster care often fare better when they live with someone they know. Yet, she added that too often the additional financial responsibility and a hampered ability to make important and legal decisions for the child without legal guardianship create burdensome and sometimes impossible conditions for these caregivers.
