Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina Pamela Evette recently participated in a home visit with a Lexington County mother and her child.
The Lt. Governor observed a Parents as Teacher’s home visit, one of three evidence-based home visiting models that Children’s Trust supports. Eau Claire Cooperative Health Center, a Children’s Trust community partner, is one organization that delivers Parents as Teachers in the midlands.
Home visiting programs are voluntary for parents of young children, offering support, mentoring and coaching in the home. These programs connect families to resources and community support, identify potential gaps in children achieving developmental milestones, build parents’ positive parenting skills and increase family self-sufficiency.
During the home visit, the Lt. Gov. joined the home visitor, mother and her young son to learn more about the program. The visit focused on how the child was doing at school and if he was getting along with others. They played with blocks to teach colors and shapes.
Following the home visit, Lt. Governor Evette advocated for the expansion of home visiting programs throughout the state during a news conference at the S.C. State House.
“I have seen first-hand the invaluable work being done by Children’s Trust home visiting programs in our state,” said Lt. Governor Evette. “By offering guidance and support directly within the families’ homes, these programs empower parents and caregivers with the tools and resources they need to provide the best possible start in life for their children.”
Children’s Trust administers the federal investment in home visiting for South Carolina – the Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program.
